BECOMING AN ADVOCATE IS AS EASY AS ...
WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ADVOCATE?
This is your invitation to get involved personally in Raising Haiti, to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Haitians!
When you watch the documentary, ‘Father Joseph’ recently released on Netflix and iTunes about him you will quickly agree that Father Joseph Philippe’s smile and never-quit attitude is inspiring. More, it is infectious. So is his compelling bottom-up vision for raising Haiti’s poor. Maybe that is why he has already succeeded on so many levels!
Born and raised in Fondwa, a small, rural community south of Port au Prince, Father Joseph has faced what most would consider insurmountable obstacles. Not so for Father Joseph. During a lifetime of service he has created a myriad solutions for his fellow Haitians.
In 1988 Father Joseph established the Association of the Peasants of Fondwa (APF), Haiti as a model for organizing rural communities to tend to their own transformation through economic, educational and spiritual empowerment.
He is best known as the founder of Fonkoze, Haiti’s most successful micro finance institution which has evolved from a single office established in 1995 and now embraces all of Haiti with 1,000 employees, 45 branches, multi millions in assets, 250,000 depositors and tens of thousands of loans, 97% of which are made to rural women.

What is the Raising Haiti Advocacy initiative?
It’s simple. We are a growing community of supporters whose goal it is to connect hearts and raise resources to continue this work of empowerment.
What is unique about Raising Haiti’s approach?
Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. The condition of poverty has existed for centuries and there is ample evidence that external attempts to “fix” Haiti’s problems are doomed to failure. Haiti is fundamentally an agriculture-based community with 75-80% of all Haitians residing within its 570 rural communities. Our focus is on the empowerment of Haiti’s rural poor. We believe that the solution to Haiti’s challenges lay in the power of the Haitians themselves to create wealth and sustainability. We need to follow their lead and muster the resources that will assist them in their monumental effort to create wealth and sustainability within their rural communities.
Who can become a Raising Haiti Advocate?
Anyone and everyone can become a Raising Haiti Advocate. Whether you are a member of the Haitian diaspora, a high school or university student, a member of a social club, religious group or are simply inspired to help - you can become part of this extraordinary process, assisting the Haitian community in their efforts toward transformation.
